Makkah Al-Mukarramah Library

مكتبة مكة المكرمة

Known historically as Bayt al-Mawlid (The House of the Birth), this location represents the ultimate genesis point of the Islamic message. It stands as a powerful symbol of the transformative light that ended the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)—a light far more enduring than the cultural relics of Souq Okaz or the brutal practices commemorated at Maqbara al-Shubaikah.

The Sacred Cornerstone

The Makkah Al-Mukarramah Library is situated in the historic Suq al-Layl area, just outside the eastern wall of the Masjid al-Haram, near the hills of Safa and Marwah. It is believed to have originally been the house of Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) father.

  • The Prophetic Birth: According to overwhelming scholarly consensus and continuous local tradition, it was here, on a Monday in Rabi’ al-Awwal, that Amina bint Wahb (R.A.) gave birth to the final Messenger of Allah (S.W.T.). This event was marked by miraculous signs that spread across the land, signaling the end of an era of darkness and the beginning of the era of prophecy.
  • A Continuous Site of Veneration: For centuries after the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) death, this site was venerated by Muslims. Later Muslim rulers and scholars purchased the property, transforming it into a mosque and a place where people could gather to remember the blessed birth. Even through periods of political change, the location retained its distinct identity as the birthplace.

From House to Library

In the early modern era, the site was officially repurposed by the Saudi government to fulfill a powerful dual function:

  1. Preserving the Sanctity of Knowledge

In the mid-20th century, to preserve the historical significance of the site while adhering to the principle that worship should be confined to sanctioned mosques like the Masjid al-Haram, the structure was converted into a public library dedicated to Islamic research and heritage.

  • Knowledge as the New Veneration: This transformation is symbolic. The first word revealed to the Prophet (S.A.W.) was “Iqra” (Read!). Placing a library—a center for reading, learning, and research—on the birthplace is a profound endorsement of Islam’s emphasis on knowledge (‘Ilm) as the foundation of its civilization. It reminds the pilgrim that the physical birth of the Prophet (S.A.W.) gave way to the intellectual and spiritual birth of the revelation.
  • A Priceless Collection: Today, the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Library houses a vast and valuable collection of rare Islamic manuscripts, historical documents, and scholarly works, making it a critical intellectual resource for Muslims worldwide.
  1. A Gateway to the Seerah

While visitors cannot access the exact room of the birth, the exterior of the library and its position next to the expanded Haram remains a focal point for Ziyarat.

  • The Barakah of Origin: The Barakah associated with this site is one of origin and spiritual genesis. Standing here connects the pilgrim directly to the very beginning of the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) earthly existence, invoking a deep sense of love, honor, and gratitude.
  • The Week of the Prophet: The Prophet’s (S.A.W.) birth on a Monday, which also saw the beginning of revelation, his Hijrah, and his passing, infuses the site with the sanctity of the entire Seerah, encapsulated in a single location.

The Lesson of the First Light

The Ziyarat to the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Library is essential for understanding the entirety of the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) journey, which began in the sanctity of a simple home and concluded with the establishment of a global faith.

  • From Vulnerability to Victory: The site reminds us that the greatest light dawned in a place of apparent vulnerability—the home of an orphan. Yet, this humble beginning led to the strength that overcame the opposition of the Quraysh and ended the cruelty seen at Maqbara al-Shubaikah.
  • The Eternal Message: By visiting the birthplace, the pilgrim honors the Messenger (S.A.W.) and reaffirms their commitment to the message he brought forth—a message that began with the command to read and continues to illuminate the world today.

The Makkah Al-Mukarramah Library stands as Makkah’s quietest and most foundational monument, marking the spot where the final message was given its physical vessel and the light of Islam first shone upon the world.
